Personnel: Mike Gent (vocals, guitar, Mellotron, tambourine); Pete Donnelly (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Orenda Fink (vocals, cornet); Maria Taylor (vocals); Jed Parish, Jeremy Smith (percussion); Brian Charles (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Brian Charles. Recording information: Zippah Studios, Brookline, MA (06/2000-07/2000). SUCKING IN STEREO came less then a year after the stellar and teasing FOR EP FANS ONLY. This was the Figgs's second release as a trio and they're by turns taut, supple, and loopy, as only a great rock & roll band can be. The set starts with "Opening Night" and a cascading flurry of drums courtesy of Pete Hayes, which then morphs into an exuberant rhythmic foundation replete with perfect handclaps, setting the stage for Mike Gent's guitar and Pete Donnelly's bass to jump in and lock everything together. That they accomplish everything they need to in one minute and 48 seconds is testament how good the Figgs are. And that's just one out of 12 songs. Large hooks are wedded to small details for an abundance of treats sewn into the very fabric of the performances. One sterling example is the fade-out of "Reaction"--pure and subtle dazzle! Not only do these guys love classic albums from decades past, they've also made one this time out.
