Mary Bailey has kept fishes for many years and joined the British Cichlid Association in 1972, serving on the committee since 1982, initially as Technical Editor, and as Treasurer since 1990. She began writing professionally in 1986 and regularly contributes to Cichlid News, Practical Fishkeeping and Aquarist and Pondkeeper magazines. She has also contributed to several books including Enjoying Cichlids (1993) and the Cichlids Yearbook series, and was voted "Practical Fishkeeping Favorite Fishkeeping Writer", 1994.
Gina Sandford has kept tropical fishes since childhood and writes regularly for Aquarist and Pondkeeper, Fishkeeping Answers and Practical Fishkeeping magazines. She has been Secretary and Editor to The Catfish Association of Great Britain for many years and also lectures on tropical fishes. She has written two books previously: A Manual of Tankbusters and Tropical Fish Identifier.
With hundreds of thousands of tropical freshwater and marine fishes to choose from, it is no wonder that aquarium fishkeeping is such an absorbing and popular pastime. Without the right information, however, it can also be a confusing and frustrating one as you discover, too late, that the appealing Chocolate Gourami you have just bought requires different water conditions to that in your aquarium; or that your newly acquired Firemouth quadruples in size, is aggressive and difficult to keep, and may eat smaller tankmates!

This informative book will give you the practical advice you need to choose your fishes with confidence, and provide the right conditions in which they can live and breed successfully. The book takes each of the exotically named major fish groups - cichlids, catfish, cypriniformes, cyprinodonts, characins, anabantids, miscellaneous freshwater, brackish and marine fishes - explains simply what they are, and looks at the general merits, demerits, habitats, feeding and breeding requirements of the many hundreds of fishes in each group. In this way, the reader can quickly ascertain whether the Lake Malawi Cichlid they want is suitable for their aquarium, and if it isn't, which other cichlids would be.

Illustrated with over 330 photographs of fishes, the book offers an in-depth study of the major fish groups, plus plenty of practical tips on how to keep and breed the most popular species in each group successfully. With expert and accessible advice, this is the book that every aquarium owner - beginner or expert - should possess.
