This is the final, explosive confrontation in Phantom Blood between Jonathan and Dio and the conclusion to JoJo's first part (Phantom Blood). JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is an iconic manga series by Hirohiko Araki running almost 30 years. It has a huge following worldwide but until recently an official English translation has been unavailable for most parts. Viz Media provides one in grand style with this large, hardbound series (an English version of the Japanse JoJonium collection) with some color pages, new cover illustrations by Araki and author's notes. Part 1 was written in the late 80's and the style reflects that so it may not be to everyone's tastes. The story is outrageous, violent and unique and the characters are memorable, however. And, if you plan to follow the JoJo series this part is a must-read because it provides a foundation. JoJo's Bizarre Adventures is a multi-generational series. Each part has a different protagonist and genre. The style evolves from the extremely comic-book overmuscled style here in Part 1 to a more elegant and modern fashion-oriented style like the illustrations on the cover. There is much violence, coarse language and grotesque imagery so if those put you off you may look elsewhere. OTOH, the plot developments, characters and fights in this series have left a huge impact on modern manga and anime and their influence is plain. Phantom Blood is actually one of the weakest parts since it was the first and Araki was still trying to find his voice but the series is truly epic and this hardbound volume is almost criminally cheap for how great it is.
