It's the book that started it all, the well-loved edition that first bought Betty Crocker cookbooks into American homes and hearts. Published in 1950, this ground-breaking title made cooking easy, it made cooking appealing, and best of all, it made cooking fun. Packed full of practical tips, useful hints, and lavish color photography, this was the book that shaped cooking for generations, the book that people remember. Every recipe you -- or your mother -- ever wanted is here, from pigs in blankets, to Emergency Steak to Chicken Tomato Aspic. Enjoy the clever ideas throughout -- twelve months of birthday cake ideas, showing how to decorate a cake to match each month's gem stone, pointers to make setting up a kitchen easy, or hints to make housework more pleasant. Feel a part of history when making Home Front Macaroni, developed during WW II rationing to stretch meat. Get into the spirit of fun with a Betty Crocker "Cookie Shine" or cookie baking party. People who grew up with this book will want it for the memories; those who are new to the book will want it for its charm and its intelligent approach to cooking. It's a perfect keepsake and a great gift.

This book contains the 'comfort food' recipes of my childhood, as well as the recipes of a generation I now work with. My nursing home residents remember the book, many of them had this in their own kitchen, and now enjoy looking up familiar recipes to use in either our "What's Cookin'?" class, or in our reminisce activities. It also comes in handy at home because I have grandchildren of my own that I enjoy passing on my love of cooking to. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who grew up in the 50's/60's or those who want authentic "Grandma" dishes.

I learned from my mother's Betty Crocker cook book and have since worn out my own cook book and now have purchased for my 11 yr old and 15 yr old granddaughters to give as Christmas gifts at the younger one's request. Can't wait to give. Most questions are answered and most recipes are winners. The chiffon cakes are super.

"could this be the edition used in my home economics class in 1957??"

    • Q:

"Is the format "loose leaf" the same as ring bound?"

      • A:

Hello Lynn B, yes, this cookbook is ring-bound. Thank you for shopping with us!

    • Q:

"Is this cookbook the one with complete menu ideas for meals? I'm searching to buy one that was identical to the one my mother had while I was growing up. I remember it had menu ideas, like what vegetable, fruit, bread and dessert was recommended to go with the main dish, or meat. I loved this cook book and thought I would inherit it after she passed, but obviously someone else claimed it or got tossed away. I believe it was the early 50's edition, with the loose leaf and ring binder."

      • A:

Hello Dena R. This is a reprint of the original 1950 classic cookbook. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    • Q:

"Why did you choose this product?"

      • A:

I was born in 1943 and when 7 years old started helping my mom bake many recipes using the copyright 1942 "Betty Crocker Cook Book of All-Purpose Baking" -- by General Mills, Inc.It features 220 of the best tested recipes. The book, costing 25 cents, is still in pretty good shape, except it is rough around the edges of the cover. So, I wanted to buy the new one to continue using the recipes for many family generations. I hope it will have some of the same recipes that are in the 1942 version. [the cakes are so very delicious] Are you interested in seeing the 1942 Better Crocker Cook Book with her picture (in color) centered above the wording on the cover; it is framed in a scalloped edged oval, about 2" tall.
