What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome?

Told in a straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer's trademark, The Story of the World series covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present. Africa, China, Europe, the Americas—find out what happened all around the world in long-ago times. This first revised volume begins with the earliest nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor. Newly revised and updated, The Story of the World, Volume 1 includes maps, a new timeline, more illustrations, and additional parental aids. This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children. Enjoy it together and introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world's civilizations.

Each Story of the World volume provides a full year of history study when combined with the Activity Book, Audiobook, and Tests—each available separately to accompany each volume of The Story of the World Text Book. Volume 1 Grade Recommendation: Grades 1-5.

    • A new way to learn/teach anceint history

What I love about this book is it is WORLD history- not what the Eurpoeans were doing from ye' Roman times on, like the history I learned in school. It covers the Indius Valley, the Chinese migration and Yellow River Valley, and touches some on lower African cultures, as well as a lot of time in Egpyt of course. It does have some religious chapters about Abraham and his decents, but it not overly religious and does not stray from the otherwise documentable history outside of thse one or two chapters. You chould easily skip them if you wished. To me the meat of the program comes from combining this text with the activity book written for it. It offers fictional and non-fictional additional reading, activities and foods. It'sa wonderful program overall. And i ahve used it for two years. We are going on STOW Vol 3 next year, and we look forward to it with excitment. My kids love the history projects and can relate the new facts they learn to the older historical events that took place- a sign that the program sticks and is comprehendable to children. I love this program and can't say enough about it.

    • TEN STARS!!!!!!!
      Verified Purchase

I would give this series TEN STARS if I could. I did purchase the entire set of CD's, the book and the test booklet. My daughter looks forward to every chapter. During 'study' time for other subjects or simply cleaning and performing chores around the house, I play the discs and everyone around can't help but listen and be engaged in the story. This also helps my child pronounce the words or the kingdoms, rulers, etc better. Both adults find the book series as entertaining as our children find them. I look forward to purchasing all the other sets and highly recommend The Story of the World to all children.

    • Excellent history book for children (and adults!)
      Verified Purchase

This book is extremely easy to read, but packed with information. I bought them for my 10 year old, but my 6 year old even enjoys them (I read them at storytime to her). I've bought all four volumes and they are all excellent. ~I bought these books (it's a four volume set, on Overstock you buy them separately though) for my son, but I even enjoy reading them any chance I have. They are not dry boring history textbooks, but exactly what it says they are "stories" of the world.~

A fantastic program for classically educating your child. This is the first of 4 books and they are written in historical order. The supplemental books are a must with this one if you are homeschooling since they give you projects, quizzes, suggested supplemental reading lists and ways to adapt to different age and ability levels. The book also works well as a stand alone if you are interested in simply reading through history as a continuous story. The chapters are short and managable and understandable for almost all age groups from Kindergarten on up. Excellent starting point for sparking interest in history and then exploring those topics further.
