My mattress is a 200 pound rock. It's hard, it's lumpy and there's a spring that pokes me in the hip all the time. What's worse? It's less than a year old. So, I'm stuck with it for awhile. I bought the Splendorest 2-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper to alleviate (hopefully) some of the negative issues I have with my bed. I've had it a little over a week now. So far, so good. It isn't the miracle worker I was hoping for. My mattress is still hard as a rock...only now there is a LITTLE cushion between it and me. Overall, I like the mattress topper. I do have two small issues with it. 1) It's supposed to be a Queen sized mattress topper. It does NOT reach all four corners of my mattress. THIS is a little bit of a disappointment. 2) The MEMORY FOAM of the topper works really well. It remembers the favorite spots where my husband and spend most of our time. The problem is...there is already (after just a week) and rather large camel's hump in the very middle of our bed where neither of us sleep often. THAT does not make me happy. Those two issues are why I rated this product--overall--a four.
While the Proviso is that BED SHOPING IS A NIGHTMARE!!!, this little, afforable pad solved a huge problem, and saved us a huge expense! We shopped for months for a new bed, playing the aggravating game of having to bypass mattress names and cover fabrics and instead use the SPECS to compare apples to apples. After a half-dozen comfort tests at the store, we decided on a high- end Beautyrest, but of course even six 30 minutes tests were not conclusive. Sure enough, by night 2 we knew the plush top was just to squishy for us. Grateful for the seller's one-time exchange poilcy, and hoping to avoid a repeat, we went EXTRA FIRM. OOPS! So started a series of fixes, beginning with a 4" gel foam, 4lb density topper. It was like lying on quick sand, and as the year progressed, my body revolted on me after 6 decades of use and a year of three home moves filled with too much bending, lifting, and reaching. Carpel Tunnel, an aggrevated Rotator Cuff tear, and a bone- on-bone hip awaiting replacement made prying loose from that gel foam trap unsurmountable, but removing the pad made the extra firm mattress intolerable. Added a 2" polyfill mattress pad; not enough. Added another 2" cotton/poly on top of that; almost there... After MONTHS of reading reviews online and searching options, the decision was made to add another 2" corrugated gel pad. Concerned that one is was less than the 4lb density we wanted, (then annoyed after ordering to notice that while Overstock had listed it as a 3.5, they also had it in fine print as a 3.2, which was just too close to useless for our needs. Loving O.com, it is sad to report that customer service was useless in clarifying and disinterested in going any extra steps to confirm the density level.) In the end, however, that did turn out to be an error on the webpage, and we were glad we gambled rather than cancelling the purchase! I do not think this pad would have solved our problem alone, however, our solution of putting the 2" foam topper directly on the firm mattress, folowed by the deep poly/cotton blend thick mattress cover, and another (thankfully very tight with deep stretch sides!) shallower fiber pad, has resulted in a very lush but remarkably solid sleep surface for us!!! I am fairly certain we could not hage done better with a standard factory bed. By fiddling with a combination of materials we were able to create a custom feel for our bed. The triple solution does mean that the pad alone was not the full answer, however it was the last addition to the fix, and without it we'd still be losing sleep. At this point, we are sleeping wonderfully, even with my hip still awaiting repair. I hghly recommend pairing the gel foam 2-3" pads to a plush 1-3" poly or polycotton mattress pad. The result is a cloudlike lucious matress top, that puts some distance between you and the foam, buffers any off-gassing odor ( though this pad gave off a very minimal odor compared to the others we've owned), prevents getting sucked in by a too- thick foam topper, mitigates the tendancy of the foam pad reflecting body heat, and makes a too hard jattrpess feel like the most high quality luxury hotel bed! What's more: All three Items came to under $150 at Overstock. Who can beat that?!?!?!?!?
