Ok, I can't even begin to tell you how much time I spent reading reviews and researching a comforter that was going to meet my needs but most importantly, my requirements. I looked at both down filled and alternative down. I wanted the heavy, puffy, never want to get out of bed comforter. I went back and forth between a couple. All of them were Hotel Grand btw. The true down comforters were just not affordable and the reviews were less than stellar. I finally decided on this one, as it met all of my other requirements, due to two things. The thread count and the positive reviews. So, I ordered it. Shipping was excellent, it was my first item to arrive. It came in a tight square (CA King) but was heavy. I am extremely pleased with this comforter. It is warm and with time, a dryer, and some patience, it is the poofiest that one can be. My wife adores this. For the price, it cannot be beat. The 1000 thread count allows this to be very soft. It can be used by itself as it is that beautiful but we use a duvet cover due to the color and our dogs. Between chosing the 600 thread count or the 1000, although a small difference in price, I made the correct decision. Again, I spent days researching this purchase. Too many people with disappointed with the quality, lack of "poofiness", etc with their comforters. Not this one. It meets all of my needs and more.
First, I have to tell you that I am more picky than most people, especially when it comes to stuff that will touch my skin! My husband says I would have made a great Queen! I carefully read reviews looking for just the right comforter for our Master Bedroom. My husband and I had enjoyed the fluffy, soft covers during our stay at the Hampton Inn, and we wanted something very close to their white, soft comforter. I decided on the down alternative comforter, because I was afraid I might have allergies to real down.
I then started to narrow down the comforters that Overstock has to offer. I did not want to pay $400 for a comforter, like one would have to do for Hampton's bedding. We are pretty rough on our comforters, and I needed something more "disposable."
When this comforter came in the mail, I promptly took it straight to my extra-large capacity washer to give it a freshening wash, as I do not like the smell of a new piece of bedding, generally. I wanted to wash it in my detergent and fabric softener so that it would be fresh for the first night of use.
As one person previously reported, I got a small tear in the seam where the comforter rubbed against the agitator, apparently. I decided that this comforter, especially in a king size, is just too big to go in a home washer, and I think it really would be better to take it to a laundry mat or dry cleaner for cleaning. Otherwise, you are going to rub all kinds of tears in it.
I put it through 3 cycles in the dryer. It fluffed fine, but it takes a long time to dry all that filling inside. Now that my comforter was clean and fresh, I was ready to test it for comfort.
My initial feeling was that the material did not really seem as soft (at supposedly 700 thread count) as my 400 thread count sheets did. For particularly sensitive princesses like me, I thought it had just a tad bit of roughness to it, but nothing horrible. After sleeping with it for two nights now, I can say that it is wonderful. It does not make me itch or bother my very sensitive skin in any way. It is incredibly soft!
The weight of this comforter is about moderate. It is not too light or too heavy. We sleep under heavy air conditioning, and it definitely is wonderful to snuggle under it in the cool hours of the morning. It keeps you very warm without being really heavy on your body. I think it will be great in the winter here in Tennessee.
Like other reviewers, I will say that it runs extremely small. I put it on a Queen bed with thick mattresses, and it will not even cover from top to bottom of the mattress. It comes down on the sides just about to where the dust ruffle should start. I think you are going to have to find a thin spread or something to put over it if you want to have a good looking bed ensemble. It definitely does not cover my bed like I would like. I use it more like one would use a blanket. I have a more formal spread to put on when company comes.
So what is my bottom line? Even with all its shortcomings (mostly the size of it), I love it, and so does my husband. It is every bit as comfortable as the Hampton Inn's luxurious bedding. At this price, you can use it and replace it when it gets worn out. I am thinking about getting one for all my kids for their beds for the winter. They are so nice to wrap up in, and if you are worried about soiling the white comforter, I would recommend getting a comfortable duvet cover that can be taken off and washed periodically. For me, I think I will just take mine to the laundry mat when it needs washing and put it in their huge commercial washer. You don't have to do it that often, and it is a minor inconvenience to have this much plush, soft cover night after night. I urge you to go for it! I doubt you would be disappointed.
I searched for at least a month to find a down alternative comforter that would be fluffy with thread count of at least 500. I was excited when I found this. I wanted an alternative to down because I didn't want to deal with the feather pricking my skin and the feathers possibly coming out. This product is just that. The filling is pretty consistent throughout. It didn't take many hours once I took the comforter out of the package for it to fluff up. It is very warm. I like to turn my air on and snuggle under the comforter. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking. I purchased because it was from the Hotel Grand Collection. I am thoroughly impressed and satisfied.
The reviews I read on several dozen other products did not compare to the positive reviews on this one and I was not let down.
I love the feel of real down comforters, but I have dogs who sleep in the bed so the convenience of machine washing was necessary (in case of accidents). This product arrived a little squished, but with fluffing it was great and it feels the closest to real down as any alternative I have encountered before. I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference if I weren't told! It has held up, too, after a couple of washes, which I was pleased with! A warning, though, is the king size (what I purchased) barely fits in my regular sized washer.
I agree with previous reviewers that getting the size larger than needed is a good idea. I have a queen bed, bought a king and it hangs over the edge quite a bit, but I believe the queen would have been too small.
There are a lot of reviews of this, so I will start with a point that no one has yet made. Please take a moment to consider, and even look up the abusive treatment of geese to produce those luxurious down comforters everyone is so hooked on. I dare you to watch a video of it. Now think for a moment of sheep that are made more comfortable through annual shearing--their parasites controlled, the mats removed for the hot summer months. The ancient tradition of using goose down wasn't even similar to the travesty we practice today. I have pet geese, and I won't participate in this cruelty any more, though I've owned countless goose down comforters and pillows over the years in my ignorance. You may be a vegetarian, and I applaud you for it. I am not. I believe in humane use of farm animals. Commercial use in this country is not humane. Now on to the comforter! I wanted to sleep under it in warm weather before reviewing, but then thought I might be waiting a bit, since we live in the mountains and experience cool nights year-round. It is far more cozy and comfy than down. It stays put, looks neat, etc. Don't let the "lack of loft" fool you! It is lightweight and feels much like down--only better. You will love it. I am positive.
