Avengers Assemble!

Here at Overstock.com, we like to kick back and have a little fun from time to time. This last Friday, our creative team spent the afternoon away from the office to see one of, if not the, biggest movies to hit the box office this year: "The Avengers."

If you haven't seen it yet (what are you waiting for?), it's about a group of superheroes brought together to protect the Earth from the villain Loki who's gotten his hands on the Tesseract. Among the cast are familiar faces from previous Marvel movies, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

The Avengers

We had a great time catching all the action this blockbuster has to offer, eating popcorn, and holding a costume contest (won by a very convincing Thor in a blonde wig, I might add). With an ensemble cast this full of superhero awesomeness, everyone had their favorite. Check out what some of our team had to say about their superhero of choice:

Captain America

Maegan - "I admit that I'm easily seduced by the romance of the past. It's no surprise that a vintage superhero is so appealing. Bringing back patriotism and wielding a stylish and impenetrable shield, Captain America has won a place in my heart."

Matt - "Thor … because he's got a better back story than the others, in my opinion, and he's emotionally invested in the well-being of Earth and the well-being of his brother, the person trying to take over the Earth. So there's a lot of conflict to do the right thing. Thor has a great back story and he also makes tornados with his hammer. Can YOU make tornados with a hammer? No."

Andrea - "I love all of them, but my favorite has to be Thor. I actually have yet to see the movie 'Thor,' so he took me by surprise. He has one of the most complex conflicts in the movie; plus, he can harness lightning, call his hammer to him in a very Jedi-esque way, and totally wail on the baddies. Or maybe it's just the Australian accent that I like."

Iron Man

Jessica - "My favorite Avenger is Iron Man. He's so unapologetically out for himself, but in the end he comes through. Plus, he's hot. If we could just ditch lame Pepper Pots, we'd be in business."

The Hulk

Shawna - "I loved watching The Incredible Hulk (Bill Bixby version) on TV when I was a kid, so I still have a soft spot for Dr. Banner and his alter ego."

Emily - "I grew up watching Lou Ferrigno play the Incredible Hulk. I cheered at the line 'Don't make me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry.' I guess I've always been entranced with the history of the superhero, er, super-smasher. Genius Bruce Banner, forced to be eternally frustrated by his failed experiment, doomed to live a life in fear of his other half -- the Hulk -- the giant man of green who will pretty much kick your butt no matter what side you're playing just because he can."

Meredith - "I couldn't get enough Hawkeye. Sure, he doesn't have super-human strength or a flashy spandex outfit (not in this movie, at least), but his archery skills and biceps are definitely hot. I'm hoping he'll get his own movie in the future. 'The Avengers' alluded to a lot of back story with his character and the Black Widow, and neither of them is entirely good or evil. Super compelling."

Black Widow

Jen - "I always root for the female superheroes, and the Black Widow is no different. From her opening scene, she unabashedly uses her femininity and beauty to manipulate the bad guys. That should maybe make me angry, but I think it's awesome -- she plays to her strengths and doesn't apologize for it. Loki tried to break her with painful memories and she allowed him to think he was in control just long enough to get what she needed from him. A smart and tough woman is a deadly combination."

Sean - "My favorite Avenger in this film was Black Widow. I loved her action scenes and the amount of back-story they were able to give without actually showing it. Plus, the fear she had in her eyes when she had to deal with Banner/Hulk was well done."

Have you seen The Avengers yet? If so, who's your favorite?

I agree with Meredith. I want nothing more than an all-Hawkeye movie.

I'm a big Joss Whedon fan, and even then, I was surprised how good this movie is! I want to go see it every day of my life.
