Story Behind the Art:
Batik art or wax painting is based on the principle of wax and water repelling each other, called resist dyeing. The artistic expression of working with melted wax on dyes is similar to that of painting with watercolor, oils or acrylics and the design or image can be as complicated or simple as the artist's desire. Mandlate lives and works in Maputo, Mozambique's capital, where he offers his batiks on the weekly craft market. Supporting Mandlate and his fellow batik artists helps expand their presence from the local market to an international audience.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.
