Add texture and storage to your home when you decorate your rooms with baskets. Whether you want lined baskets to display treasured heirlooms or rustic woven baskets that can hold newspapers and books, you're sure to find decorative baskets that work with your decor and allow you stow items in an attractive way. Read on for tips on decorating with baskets.
Keep shoes out of the way. If family members and guests remove their shoes when they enter your home, why not buy wicker baskets to store footwear in? Place one or two large baskets beneath a bench in your entryway so guests can easily sit down while they take off their shoes. Wicker baskets will also simplify your morning routine, as kids can find their shoes quickly when they're running late for school.
Display fruits and vegetables in your kitchen. Woven baskets are perfect for storing apples, pears and peaches during the summer and autumn months. Colorful vegetables, including peppers, carrots and eggplants, also look great in earthy baskets. Try stacking your storage baskets perpendicularly so both fruits and vegetables peek out of each basket; make sure you only stack a few baskets, however, so that they don't tip over. These decorative baskets will also stack best against a wall or in a corner.
Create texture on a bookshelf. Whether you want to store books and knickknacks in your baskets or leave them empty, lined baskets add visual appeal to any shelf and complement any decor style. Look for wood baskets with crisp linen linings to update a cherry wood hutch. These same wood baskets, shaped as ovals or rectangles, will even look nice above a TV cabinet. You can also slide a few storage baskets made of sea grass on the top of a bookcase in your living room to hold CDs, DVDs and video games. Make use of your picnic basket also; a rustic willow picnic basket can hold cloth napkins and extra silverware and dress up the curio in your dining room.
Store firewood and newspapers. Sturdy wire baskets are great options for keeping chopped wood off your floor, especially when you'll be filling your fireplace frequently. Look for wire baskets that can also display newspapers and magazines and be nestled next to a sofa or beneath a side table. Large baskets with handles are excellent storage solutions for living rooms and family rooms as well.
