Upgrading your old computer brings several advantages, including increased speed and memory. There are other factors to consider, though, like convenience and portability. One of the best upgrades you can make is replacing your old desktop computer with a new laptop. Read on to learn whether the switch to laptop computers makes sense for you.

Switching to a Laptop Computer:

  1. Portability is a huge advantage. There's a lot to be said for being able to take all of your files, projects and data with you wherever you go. Even larger 15- and 17-inch laptop computers can easily fit into most backpacks and briefcases. The portability of laptops, notebooks and netbook computers allows you to use them anywhere. Being able to work on your laptop during extra minutes or your commute to and from work or school means you can be a lot more productive.

  2. Laptops feature variety for different users. Laptop computers can have customized memory, power and display features to work better at different tasks. Business laptops and student laptops may need a lot of storage for files and homework, whereas laptop computers used for video editing or high-end video games will need more graphics processing power and display resolution. Desktop computers work better for some of these tasks, but the increase in performance may not be worth sacrificing the portability of laptop computers.

  3. Wireless access is available everywhere. Wireless connectivity is standard on all new laptop computers; that may not be the case with a desktop computer. Wireless networks are available almost everywhere, from the airport to the local coffee shop. With a wireless laptop computer, those networks make it simple for you to be connected to the Internet wherever you go. You can even access your home network server or hard drive to retrieve files with your laptop computer when you're not at home.

  4. Gaming laptops can now match some desktops. You may be getting more and more of your entertainment through your computer, which means that you may want to choose a computer that is powerful enough to handle high-definition video and graphics-heavy video games -- features that used to be found only in desktops. Now you can find laptop computers with powerful graphics processors and widescreen, high-resolution displays that can rival most gaming desktops.
