If you love creating intricate sketches or adding lovely embellishments to scrapbooking pages, then you must try oil pencils. Oil pencils are like a combination of oil pastels and colored pencils. Made from oil, wax and pigment but encased in wood, these art pencils have the unique ability to give the artist versatility while also being easy to use. You can take your and works of art to a whole new level when you know how to use oil pencils.
Oil pencils are great for sketching and other art projects. Similar to colored pencils, oil pencils can be used in a variety of ways to bring life to your sketches and drawings. If you are an artist or someone who enjoys trying different mediums in your art, then oil pencils are a great way to experiment with the technique of oil painting or pastels without the mess and learning curve. For instance, you can create an outline drawing first with a regular pencil and fill it in with your oil pencils. Try blending the colors as you go along, using a cotton ball or brush to create a variety of textures in your artwork. Once you have some oil pencils, you'll want to start experimenting right away.
Oil pencils can bring more diversity to your craft projects. If you are someone who enjoys scrapbooking or loves to make homemade cards and party invitations, then you might consider using oil pencils to add variety to your cards and pages, too. Oil pencils can be used in place of colored pencils, markers and paints and give you more control over your work with their ability to blend and add intricate detail at the same time. Experiment with oil pencils the next time you want to enhance all your homemade crafts.
While they have an advanced feel and look to them, oil pencils are simple if you follow a few basic steps. Oil pencils are probably unlike any other medium you have ever used. They blend well but can also smear, so it is a good idea to use a spray fixative to protect your art. You can apply fixative just at the end of your project or you can use it throughout the process to set different levels of your artwork and create depth. It can be very difficult to fix mistakes when working with oil pencils, although it is possible. You will first need to scrape the unwanted mark with a craft knife and then use a plastic eraser. A kneaded eraser can also help to remove mistakes.
Clean your oil pencils regularly to keep them in top condition. You can clean your oil pencils with a simple brush, removing stray particles gently. It is best to clean your oil pencils each time you sharpen them.
Try experimenting with a variety of canvases. While oil pencils work beautifully on paper, they are also fun to use on wood and fabric canvases.
