New and experienced parents know that keeping baby cribs clean is a top priority. Babies are very susceptible to germs, so keeping their rooms and cribs clean is imperative to their health. However, parents need to be cautious when picking out cleaning supplies because some harsh cleaning chemicals can harm babies. Listed below are some ideas on how to safely clean baby cribs.
Remove all items from the baby crib and wash all bedding. Remove all items from the crib, including baby bedding, toys, pillows, blankets and the baby bumper. Disinfect any plastic toys with mild disinfectant. Check the washing directions for cloth toys and bedding and follow those directions. Baby bedding should be washed regularly. While it's usually not necessary to buy specific baby-safe detergent, you should buy a mild detergent for baby bedding. For busy parents, it's a good idea to invest in several baby bedding sets that can be switched out when needed.
Remove mattress. This is a perfect opportunity to take your baby mattress outside and air it out. Airing out a baby mattress helps to get rid of unwanted smells. This is also a good time to flip the mattress. Most newborns don't weigh enough to make an indentation, but making a habit of flipping the baby mattress will help you to remember to do it on a regular basis as your child grows up.
Vacuum under the mattress. Get out a vacuum with a brush attachment and vacuum the place where the baby mattress sits while you're waiting for the bedding to go through the wash cycle. Dust bunnies and dust mites will thrive under the mattress, so getting rid of them will help to cut down on potential allergy attacks for your baby.
Dust the crib body and wipe it down with mild disinfectant. Babies love to put everything in their mouths, and the baby crib guardrail is no exception. Make sure you dust your crib regularly and follow up by wiping down the crib with a mild disinfectant. Taking these precautions will help keep your baby healthy and happy.
Place clean bedding in the crib. Now that you've cleaned and disinfected the crib, you can replace the washed bedding. The crib is ready to be occupied.
Note: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has banned drop-side cribs because they pose a risk to infants. If you currently use one of these cribs you should consider replacing it immediately.
