When you're choosing window treatments for the inside of your home, interior window shutters are a sophisticated choice. Like other styles of blinds and shades, interior window shutters are excellent for privacy, light control and reducing your heating and cooling costs. This article will provide instructions for how to install interior shutter window treatments in your home using an outside-mount technique.

An outside mount means that you install the shutters alongside the casings of the window, outside of the window frame, using hanging strips. This allows you to easily hang your shutters straight and square, even if your window isn't quite square. If your windows are not square, installing your shutters using an outside mount is the better alternative to attempting an inside mount.

Using the Outside-mount Method:

  1. Determine where to attach the hanging strips. To figure out where to attach the hanging strips, measure the window at three points from side to side and at three points from top to bottom, making sure to add on the extra height and width of the shutters. Mark the area with a pencil.

  2. Attach the hanging strips alongside the window. Use your drill.

  3. Fasten the hinges to the shutters. Use your drill for this step as well.

  4. Position the shutters over the window to make sure they are even. Mark the hanging strips at the places where the hinges will attach.

  5. pre-drill. Drill starter holes for the screws in the hanging strips along the spots you just marked.

  6. Attach the hinges to the hanging strips. Have someone hold the shutters in the open position while you use a screwdriver to loosely attach the hinges to the hanging strips. Before you tighten the screws all the way, make sure the shutters are centered and even.

  7. Adjust the position of the shutters if necessary. Once everything is aligned and level, tighten the screws all the way.

Warnings:

  1. Always follow any manufacturer instructions.

  2. If your shutters or hanging strips are unfinished, be sure to paint or stain them before installing them.
