Taking the time to clean your home's mattresses is a simple procedure that can easily become part of your normal bedroom cleaning routine. You probably change your bed sheets weekly and wash comforters often but sometimes forget to pay attention to the most important part of the bed: the mattress. It needs regular care just like any other piece of bedroom furniture. With a few household products, a fresh and odorless mattress is just a day away.

Freshen Your Mattresses:

  1. Remove the bedding from the mattress. Strip your bedroom furniture down to the bare mattress, removing bedding, plastic protectors and foam pads. To clean the mattresses in your sleeper sofas, open sofa beds and remove any protective covers.

  2. Air out the mattress. Open the windows and allow the breeze to dry moisture from the bed. Allow sunshine to warm the mattress, killing mold spores.

  3. Sprinkle baking soda over the bare mattress. Apply a thin, even layer of this common household item. Allow the baking soda to sit for up to 10 minutes, so it can absorb odors and moisture from perspiration.

  4. Vacuum. Use the brush attachment to clean the entire surface of the mattress, including the thick seams and sides. Make sure you remove all the baking soda, dust, any visible dirt and stray feathers from down bedding.

  5. Use upholstery cleaner for musty or mildewed mattresses. Follow instructions on the cleaning product or make a homemade solution of laundry detergent and warm water. Add a half teaspoon of detergent to three cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Apply a thin mist to the mattress, being careful not to soak it. Allow the mattress to air dry for 24 hours before adding bedding. To speed up the drying process, you can use a fan.

  6. Add a fresh scent. Place scented dryer sheets on the mattress before adding the plastic cover, mattress pad or fitted sheet. Replace the dryer sheets weekly when you wash the bedding for a continued fresh scent. Repeat the cleaning process once a month to keep your mattress fresh.
