Consider your physical comfort when you set up your workstation. A keyboard platform is an important part of your comfort level. Sitting at a workstation for 40 hours or more puts a strain on your body; many people complain of shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand pain when using a keyboard that is not in the proper position. Proper use of a keyboard tray with your workstation will help to prevent this issue and will allow you to work with your hands positioned in a comfortable, stable position. An adjustable keyboard tray moves to suit your comfort and takes the strain off your shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands.
Measure your workstation and keyboard. Compare your workstation measurements with the keyboard tray's listed dimensions to make sure it fits. When you measure your keyboard, be sure to include the size of your mouse pad, too. You will want to position your mouse and mouse pad on the same level as your keyboard for the most comfort. Also, be sure to take note whether your computer chair has arms that may interfere with a keyboard platform. Ideally, you will want to be able to slide your keyboard tray under the desk when it is not in use.
Look for a keyboard tray that is adjustable. Desk keyboard trays work best when you can adjust them up and down for the most comfortable position. You'll want the ability to adjust the keyboard from side to side and to tilt it forward or backward to get the best placement in your workstation.
Purchase a keyboard tray with a padded wrist rest. If the adjustable keyboard tray that you like does not come with a padded wrist rest, you can purchase one separately as an accessory.
When you set up your keyboard tray, make sure that you place it directly in front of your computer monitor. You don't want to be leaning more to one side than the other, constantly turning your head or torso. Proper placement of items around your workstation will prevent stressful positions and repetitive stress.
The best position for your keyboard tray is one where your shoulders are relaxed and your elbows are in line with your keyboard. Your wrists should not be bent, so adjust the slope accordingly.
