Fishing Buying Guide

from Overstock.com

The most important fishing gear fishermen depend on is their fishing rod and reel; and Overstock.com has great deals on lots of fly fishing equipment and bait fishing tackle. But with so many different products to choose from, it can be difficult for the beginning fisherman to know what to buy. Our fishing buying guide will help you find the perfect fishing equipment.

What you need to know

When selecting fishing tackle, important factors to consider are the species and size of fish you want to catch, the bodies of water where you will typically be fishing, and whatever feels comfortable in your hands.

Fishing Rods

Probably the most important piece of fishing gear is the rod. fishing rods have three main qualities you should pay attention to: construction, action and power. The grip and rod guides are also important

Rod Construction

Fiberglass fishing rods tend to be strong, durable and inexpensive. They are not as sensitive as graphite rods, but will hold up under more abuse. For that reason, fiberglass fishing rods are ideal for beginning fishermen and children.

Graphite rods are popular for their sensitivity. Graphite’s strength, or modulus rating, is usually listed as IM6, IM7, IM8, etc. A higher number signifies better graphite. When it comes to fly fishing, the best rods are graphite.

Many fishing rods are made of fiberglass and graphite composites. These provide unique pairings of strength and sensitivity. Composite fishing rods are an excellent choice for most fishermen, and they are usually less expensive than graphite rods.

Rod Action

A rod’s action describes its flexibility. Rod action is classified from slow to extra fast. Slow action fishing rods bend along the whole length of the rod and are mostly used for catching pan fish. Fast action rods bend only near the tip and are used to catch large game fish. Moderate or medium action means the fishing rod bends closer to the middle. A medium action rod is usually good for trout fishing and bass fishing.

Rod Power

A rod’s power is a measure of its strength. Lighter power fishing rods are used for catching small fish. Heavy power rods are used for catching large fish. For trout fishing, a medium rod is perfect, and for bass fishing, a medium high rod is probably good.

Rod Grips and Rod Guides

Not to be forgotten are a fishing rod’s grip and rod guides. Cork grips are generally the most sensitive and comfortable handles, and a high-quality cork grip makes it easier to feel when fish are biting. Cork comes in varying degrees of quality, however, and as a general rule, the nicer the rod, the nicer the cork. As far as rod guides go, hard ceramic guides are the best, as they will allow your line to move smoothly without fraying.

Fishing Reels

When it comes to fishing reels, the important term to know is “gear feel.” The smoother a reel turns, the better the gear feel.

The action of the reel also needs to be good. A fishing reel’s construction has the greatest effect on its action. Metal construction, ball bearings and bearing clutches make for smoother casting and better fishing.

Fishing questions and answers

How long should my fishing rod be?

The length of the rod has the greatest effect on casting. A longer fishing rod allows you to cast further. That means if you plan on doing a lot of ice fishing, you probably want a short rod. Also, if you fish in areas with dense vegetation, a shorter rod would make it easier to cast.

How can I protect my rod from breaking?

Be extra careful when getting your fishing rod out of the car, especially if it is a graphite rod. Too many people break their rod on the car door. Also, remember your rod’s power rating and don’t use fishing lure or line that is too heavy.
