Ergonomic keyboards are a great solution to muscle strain and the detrimental effects of repetitive stress activities like typing. If you are spending 40 hours or more at your workstation, it should be comfortable. Ergonomic keyboards are keyboards that can either be adjusted or can be bought in positions that make your workstation more comfortable. Ergonomic keyboards come in many different styles to offer various comfort solutions. Consider the following facts when choosing an ergonomic keyboard for your desk.

Ergonomic Keyboard Info:

  1. Ergonomic keyboards are designed to prevent injury. Ergonomic keyboards provide a level of comfort for typists and help to prevent or alleviate problems associated with typing, such as muscle strain or carpal tunnel syndrome. Ergonomic keyboards are designed to allow your hands to have a more natural position while typing to reduce strain. Consider whether you are already having hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder or neck pain. Take preventive measures to eliminate repetitive stress and prevent injury.

  2. Types of ergonomic keyboards. Many types of ergonomic keyboards are available. A split keyboard divides the keys into two or more sections and typically angles the sections so you won't need to push your wrists together in order to type. A tented keyboard is similar to a split keyboard, but the separate sections are tilted so your palms are not forced to be parallel with the desk surface. Some tented keyboards are actually split in half, allowing you to move the sections however you like. Supportive keyboards include additional wrist or palm rests. Each keyboard has its strengths, and you should consider what position is most comfortable for your hands and wrists to be in while at your workstation.

  3. Ergonomic Keyboard Trays. Even if your keyboard is the standard keyboard, you can make it more ergonomic by adding an adjustable keyboard tray to your workstation. This tray attaches to your workstation and can move to a position that is more comfort while you type.

  4. Consider your workstation. While searching for an ergonomic keyboard, keep in mind the layout of your workstation, your keyboard tray size and whether you are right-handed or left-handed. Ergonomic keyboards are larger, on average, than regular keyboards. You may need to consider how much space you have at your workstation and decide if you will need to rearrange your mouse, computer monitor and office supplies for optimal comfort.
