Most people spend many hours a day sitting at an office chair, whether at a home computer, work or both. That's why it's so important for your desk chair to accommodate changing positions while providing physical support and comfort. Consider seat comfort and features, mobility options and overall posture controls to ensure a comfortable seated position. Before buying one for yourself, take a look at this desk chair fact sheet.
Design: Choose an office chair that offers adjustment features. Posture is affected by the relationship between the desk chair, work surface and the floor. Create a work space where the desk chair and work surface are adjustable. Manipulating the chair height, tilt and position of armrests is essential for proper posture and comfort.
Seat features: Look for a desk chair with a curved seat. The front edge should curve toward the floor, not putting any pressure on the back of the thighs or knees. Choose a mesh-style fabric seat that allows for airflow. Non-stick seat surfaces are most comfortable in warm environments.
Seat and backrest adjustments: A good desk chair allows you to adjust the height, angle and depth of the seat and backrest so your feet can be placed flat on the floor. Pneumatic adjustment features, a sliding seat pan and backrest in-out adjustability are key features for supported posture. Choose a desk chair containing internal springs in the backrest for greater flexibility. Reclining slightly in a desk chair transfers upper body weight to the backrest, easing weight off the vertebrae.
Armrest features: Bend your arms at a 90-degree angle with your hands pointing to the area in front of you. Arm rests should be adjusted to replicate this posture and allow for free movement within the work environment around the desk chair. The primary function of armrests is to support the upper arms and shoulders, and provide padding for the forearms and elbows.
Stability and mobility: Look for a desk chair with a stable five-arm base. Pick a model with casters that allow mobility around an extended work station. Rolling to a nearby file cabinet or to the far end of a work desk is simple with a desk chair mounted on casters. Choose casters that are safe for the floor surface or cover the floor with a protective floor pad designed for office and desk chair use.
