Video Game console orders cancelled
-
Early today, postings for video game consoles being advertised for very low prices starting appearing, linking to overstock. On the Overstock site, the prices were shown as "Today Only" on the discounted bundles. After ordering, I received a confirmation for the order, but a few moments ago, received a cancellation notice for the order, citing a pricing mistake. I understand that price mistakes are under the ToS, but how is this different than a brick and mortar store advertising a product at an incorrect price, and under law, having to honor that price? I understand that the video game systems showed an incorrect price, but I question how a gross oversight like this occurs. This does not fill me with confidence that Overstock knows how to manage their website, and if an automated system can be so easily wrong, how do I know that my personal information will be secure as well? Overstock, please feel free to chime in on this; what happened to the orders where a customer purchased a console, along with games at regular price to play on it. Was the entire order canceled, or did the console just get cancelled, and the games allowed to be purchased? I would like to believe that the right thing was done, and that the entire order was cancelled. If not, I would question if the price mistake was truly unintentional at that point. Thank you, - J

Hello arrius07, Thank you for posting on the Overstock.com Community forums. The items which were canceled were affected by an unfortunate pricing error. I apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this issue has caused. If you have any questions about your order specifically please email us at twitter@overstock.com. We are able to assist you better with more direct contact.

I understand that this was a pricing error, which I acknowledged in my original post. My concern is that Overstock entered into an agreement to fulfill the purchase, and reneged on that agreement. I also recognize that support is offered through direct contact, but as I feel there are others who have experienced this same issue, and that it is morally right for Overstock.com's stance on this to be public, and provide reasons as to why this error occurred. On an additional note, as a retailer operating publicly, Overstock.com is subject to risks in the market. Not having clear control over your sale system is a risk that Overstock.com should be taking responsibility for. Admitting that an error was made and cancelling orders is not respectable or professional. As a company, own up to your mistake. -J

I agree this is very bad policy, I feel cheated. I found the deals myself last night, because I was searching for a wii system on many sites. I was purchasing it for my girlfriend as a gift and now I will not be receiving her gift. I will also not be shopping on over-stock ever again. I ordered the same products at amazon and they are already in transit. I think we should all boycott the overstock system just so they understand that their cancelling our orders is not acceptable. There is a huge difference that a brick and mortar store would have had to provide the items at the price advertised and that is what overstock should have done. Instead they have created a very unhappy never-to-be a customer who will inform everyone I know that overstock cannot be trusted. Also I would like to mention they took my funds from my bank account but have not returned them. So how long will my money be missing? This is another bad policy. We cancelled your order.... but you don't get your money back. How stupid are the people at overstock.com? An apology is not enough, especially without even refunding the money they took in seconds within several hours of the cancellation they did without my consent. Also, a stupid email is not a good way to inform a customer. Oh but I can call them at my expense too. Hmmmm, sounds like the government should look into the unethical business dealings here and prevent future sales entirely. I am very dissapointed and think there must be hundreds or thousands who feel just as cheated.

If this had been just one game system or just one package, the 'pricing error' would make sense. This was my first, and most likely now my last, experience with O.co so I'm extremely disappointed to find that they will bait people in like this, hit the authorization on their credit card, then refuse to fill the order.

I had the exact experience as stated previously. I ordered not one but 2 with different prices listed for gifts because I thought they must be really OVERSTOCKED to sell them at these prices; hence the name OVERSTOCK! If I were in say a WALMART and the ticket prices on the shelve rang up different........guess what........they give the customer the ADVERTISED PRICE! This is the worst customer service I have EVER seen!!!! I have been shopping with overstock for years! I didn't go through another link to get the systems, I went straight to Overstock like I do almost daily to see what the 'daily deals' are. I got the confirmation of the order, the money was deducted out my account, and then I got the 'OOP.......I'm sorry' email! This is just not right!!! Then, this morning, I got another email stating 'The item you requested is now in stock'! I didn't request anything but what I ordered yesterday at the price listed!!! Very Bad Customer Service; very bad indeed!!!

My video game console order was similarly cancelled. What's more is they can't legally do so. The pricing error was not "unmistakable or obvious." All of us reasonably believed the price was accurate. They cannot legally cancel the order because of a pricing mistake unless we knew or were reasonably expected to know it was a mistake.

Overstock.com has lost a customer!!!! I do most of my shopping online and will never shop their website again...what ever happened to the customer is always right...I own a wine shop and if a price is incorrect in our system, we honor that price and then immediately change it...if it's advertised at a certain price, honor that price. But now I believe the saying "if something seems too good be true, it is too good to be true"

I think it's funny too that they limited the Nintendo to 3 items....they totally knew what they were doing.

I filed a complaint with the BBB www.bbb.org

The same situation happened to me. I feel very cheated, and I'm very disappointed that a company would not honor their prices. It is not the consumers responsiblity. Nice bait and hook tactic overstock.com. I will not be a returning customer that's for sure!

I had funds withdrawn from my account, which makes these purchases a "contact" transaction. Later in the evening, the orders were cancelled and I am not being refunded monies. How dare you, Overstock, withdraw money from my account and THEN cancel the orders. OOPS, you just lost a customer, Overstock! I will never purchase a SINGLE ITEM FROM YOUR SITE. I will always be a shopper on Amazon.com and Newegg.com, and will always recommend to my friends and colleagues to shop on line at Amazon.com and Newegg.com.

Spelling error on my part....the original post should have read "I am now being refunded monies"

Thank you for your comments everyone. We understand that yesterday's developments were disappointing to you all to say the least. We do want to apologize for our error and assure you that we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that this situation does not occur again. We are issuing refunds for all cancelled orders.

Like some of the posters said... one item price mistake is acceptable, when tons of items had price mistakes - I think it is intentional. I have not brought any thing from O since 2005, I had two orders canceled on me with 3 different items on it. I believe it is a scheme that they used to advertise themselves (for free). Sorry that I wasted my time on this "scheme" as everyone else had... I am sure its the last time I dealt with this site.
