The Story Behind the Art

These items are completely handmade in Kathmandu, Nepal. Whereas most jewelry nowadays, even 'handmade,' is cast, these pieces start as a bullion or brick of pure silver. The metal is alloyed, shaped, cut, and hammered into form completely by hand. Even the jump rings and ear wires are made completely manually. The jewelers have learned from their parents and work hard to preserve their craft by handing it down to their children. Rather than going out to a factory, which would break up the family structure that has existed in Nepal for hundreds of years, jewelers work out of their houses, often at their kitchen tables where the whole family takes some part in the creative process.
