Story Behind the Art:

The richly colored fabrics which are generally woven in traditional paisley patterns were traditionally woven on the handlooms in the Indian states which took to it during the years when Mahatma Gandhi encouraged Indians to do their own weaving. Technology has blended with tradition, and now these shawls are woven on machine (which keeps the cost down) in small shops. Even these so-called machine-made fabrics are heavily dependent on human intervention literally by the minute. That is why the designs vary from lot to lot as do the colors and the yarns: This variation is the hallmark of a home-industry. This home-industry is the life line of the Indian worker who is known to prefer his own freedom to being tied down by the strings of employment in big factories.
