They are made of mate gourds and engraved by two different sized chisels and gouges. The mate comes in different shapes and each penguin is carefully hand painted with different designs to make them one of a kind.
The Story Behind The Product
Juan and his family live in the rural area of Huancayo, Peru where the majority of the populous is poor. Juan works with his wife, 3 sons, and daughter and also involves his two daughters-in-law and his son-in-law. In peak times, they get help from other family members and neighbors in their village. This allows Worldstock to help support a family of 16 and during busy times more than 5 families in the village. Gourd art is passed on from generation to generation and Juan?s family can account for at least 6 generations of continuing tradition. The gourds were originally used as ornate water vessels for ceremonial offerings to the Incas. The family keeps their ancient Incan culture alive and Juan?s wife still dresses in full traditional attire with long fluffy skirts called ?polleras.? They hope you will enjoy the detail oriented craftsmanship they are so proud of.

I ordered 2 sets ,and though simular ,they they stand out in their own way.. No two gourds are the same size or shape. In fact one of the penguins looks to be cocking its head around like a mother would to her off-spring..The expresions are intense ..Detail incredable...Only fault is a couple out of the four were not completed to the face...(detail wise )yet not distracting from it 's overall beauty.. Not as vibrant as imaged here online but no matter...I would buy again!!****Super fast delivery got it in two 1/2 days!!!!Thanks overstock!

The penguins are absolutely beautiful! The color and carving detail have gotten rave reviews from every person who has visited our home. I use them (with a tall brass candle holder) on my round dining room table. The workmanship is exquisite and I could not be more satisfied. My only "concern" to potential buyers would be the time it took to receive them ... 3-4 weeks ... but well worth the wait, and the price is amazing. If you're ordering for a special occasion, allow plenty of time for delivery. They're gorgeous!

I thought the gourds were very cute, they look great above my cabinets, but like other reviews said they do not stand well on their own, they tend to fall over and need to be propped up to sit properly, however, i definately would reccomend them, they are beautifull painted.

Was expecting something slightly larger. The colors are not as vibrant as they look on the webpage howvever, they are still very elegant and unique. My little 2 year old loves them!

I love these. The feet are too small which makes it a little difficult to correctly balance so they don't fall over, but they are very colorful and designed beautifully. Highly recommend.
