The sign for the Teenage Mothers Association of Kenya (TEMAK) indicates that it is 'the last house towards the Obunga slums,' the most destitute area of Kisumu. Many of the unwed mothers and young girls who come to TEMAK to learn job skills live in these slums. As a community center, the organization also provides the community with an educational forum for HIV/AIDS awareness and other health issues. Many of the young women at TEMAK participate in making crafts, earning income to support themselves and their families. In the past few years, TEMAK has also become a craft center for the artisans and craftspeople in the town of Kisumu by providing local and international sales outlets that make available a sustainable income for many in the community.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received my earrings. First of all they are very lightweight. I was expecting them to be much heavier. I would caution anyone with long hair to be careful as they may get tangled in your hair because they are so light. The craftsmanship is well done. They also came in a cute little bag with a card describing where and how they were made. A cute pair of earrings to own. Arrived quickly, and packaged well. I'm happy with my first purchase from O.
These earrings are quaint and and certainly what you'd find on everyone's ears. They are fragile, though, as they are wire that could easily be bent out of shape. So, don't wear them to bed :). They have the look I was going for and epitomize the youthful, playful side of me. I also bought bicycle earrings from the same exporter as I am a cyclist (read: bicycle, not motorcycle) and a pair of similar earrings for a friend. They are light weight and comfortable to wear, unlike some dangly earrings that hurt by the end of the day. The size is good, not too small nor too big. They look best, in my opinion, with one's hair pulled back (or if you have short hair) so they are more visible. I enjoy the questions about the earrings and wish I could say that I had made them myself.
