Rust Patchwork Quilt Set (Guatemala)

This handcrafted, high-quality patchwork quilt and pillow cover set includes 1 patchwork quilt and 3 embroidered pillow covers.

Both the quilt and pillow covers combine a vibrant red/rust color with a variety of indigenous designs and patterns. The pillow covers are designed to complement the quilt rather than match it exactly. We strongly recommend that you hand wash your quilt and pillow covers in cold water and hang it to dry, or have it professionally dry cleaned.

The Story Behind The Product

Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (County) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the village¿s children are able to stay in school.

This quilt is beautiful, very thick and good quality material but it has an awful smell to it. Hopefully it will come out when I wash it to use it. If it does I would give it 5 stars.

Having visited Guatemala over 20 years ago, and purchasing yards of the hand made material, I appreciated the work that went into the quilt and pillow covers. It is beautiful, and heavy.

Bought this to match various fabrics and colours so any thing close would have worked. I have to say the colour is very misleading. It is not rust and the pattern is completely, and I mean, completely different from picture. The quilt is dark brown with red strips there are absulutly no flowers or any thing close. It is all strips and is , as my husband pointed out very manly!! He loved it. After saying all this I wont go into the trouble I have been throu' to return this item. Not only that but the wrong item was sent more than once, and the UPS label was an other nightmare.
