Story Behind the Art:

Hamadan is one of civilization's most ancient urban centers, dating back several centuries B.C. In the Hamadan area of Iran, 1500 villages specialize in their own rug designs, with over 3000 variations. Hamadan is more of a marketplace for rugs made in the vicinity. Although each village has its own distinctive designs, they have common characteristics. The majority of Hamadan rugs have a geometric pattern. Common designs have medallion-and-corner, and all-over boteh or herati. Diamond and hexagon medallions are common. Often the allover herati designs have a narrow field in the shape of a large octagon creating corners. Most often, the village women weave the rugs while the children are at school.
