Thailand's renowned artistic periods bear strong influences from India, hill tribes, and Burma. Silver symbolizes wealth and prestige, and some believe that silver wards off illness and misfortune. Originally, silversmithing was intended for small votives and as an inlay for religious statues. Later it was used to create decorative items and ceremonial and religious articles. Silver tooling then began to develop more actively. It has also been used for commercial transactions. Famed 'bullet coins,' made from quality silver, became the dominant means of exchange during the Sukhothai period. Currently, international silver markets are in resurgence, and the Thai silver industry shines among the best.
