The history of Moroccan mosaic dates back to the 12th Century. This technique, known as 'Zellige' uses hand-cut ceramic tiles which are intricately placed to create geometric patterns. The repetitive patterns typically originate from a central star and represent the unity of man. Artisans who create Moroccan mosaics are predominantly male. They range in age from teenagers to men in their 60's.
Artisans live in small villas made of concrete, which is a building material that is plentiful in Morocco and also insulates the residents from the extremely high summer temperatures and intense sun.

Customer Reviews
I bought this beautiful table (and it is beautiful!) for my parents' covered patio. It was also individually covered during the winter, as it is too heavy for them to move in and out of the house on their own. Unfortunately, the table did not weather the rain and wind too well, and by the time we took the covering off in the spring, we could see that MANY of the mosaic pieces were chipped or had come off completely. I tried to fix it myself, but I would have had to scrape all of the pieces off, sanded the table itself down, and then re-affix all of the pieces, and they wouldn't stay down with glue anyway.I ended up buying a new and different table from Overstock (which they absolutely LOVE and it continues to look great!), and I took the base of the initial table and added a piece of clear glass. Right now, it's working well this way as my kitchen table.
