Story Behind the Art

Modern artisans have been inspired by ancient peoples of Pre-Columbian times in the area. There are many artisan groups in Colombia. One group, the Zenu Artisan Community, lives in the mountains between Cordoba and Sucre. They have been living there for 800 years and so have passed down ancient artistic traditions. They are very conscious of their social and cultural responsibilities and express this in their craftsmanship. They have organized themselves into cooperative societies that help them to improve their skills and create greater income for their families.
