Handmade Djembe Drum (Ghana)

Handcrafted by artisans in Ghana, this African djembe drum is carved from a single piece of sese wood with a goatskin head and lacings.

West Africa's most popular drum, the djembe has a remarkably flexible range of tones, produced by its thin skin, shape, and tight tuning. Today, this drum is gaining popularity throughout the world as a great addition to drumming circles, rituals, gatherings, or to play alone.

The Story Behind the Product

Nana was born to a family of 9 children in the town of Kumasi in Ghana, West Africa. His parents divorced when he was only 8 years old and Nana became so rebellious that his mother sent him to live with his father in Tamale (in the Northern region of Ghana) when Nana was 12 years old. It was there that he developed an interest in art. He dropped out of school when he was 14 and started training with a master carver in Tamale. In 2000 Nana began selling his products through Worldstock. Nana is now married with 3 children and lives in Accra, Ghana. He is now a master carver with his own shop and 10 employees. Nana?s life has been so improved since he began working with Worldstock that he named his son after his contact at Overtsock.com.

This is a great looking drum and makes a wonderful sound. The bass note is not a deep as some drums, but the open tone and slap is great. I love playing my Djembe.

Can't wait to use djembe drum in drumming circle. It has nice tone/sounds - beautifully carved. You are better off spending the extra money for this drum than the others on overstock. I also bought the djembe medium for my daughter & there is no comparison in quality & sound.

Great drum! The sound is great and is beautifully carved! Although it was not the drum that was pictured, it was better! Beyond what we expected....especially for the price!

I bought this drum for my son for XMAS. His teacher said it was a very good drum. I will take the teacher's word for it because he has taught African drumming for years!
