Add a classic Oriental touch to your home decor with this Chinese Batik 'Thinking' Wall Tapestry.
This Batik tapestry is hand-painted and use the ancient 'La Ran' technique to dye the background. Known contemporarily as the 'wax dye' technique, this ancient art form hails from the southwestern regions of China. It involves applying wax on hand-woven fabric to prevent the hand-painted pattern from absorbing the dye. As the wax cracked naturally during the dying process, beautiful blue or red lines appears on the hand-painted pattern, which are called ice lines. These ice lines are the most unique feature for the tapestries, and no two tapestries have the same ice lines and hence make each tapestry unique in its own way.

The piece is double-backed for additional strength and stability and features a loop on top for the insertion of a hanging rod.
By purchasing this batik tapestry wall hanging, you are helping perpetuate ancient traditions and providing a source of income for communities in need.

    The Story Behind the Art

These beautiful tapestries are one of the traditional art pieces created by the Chinese minority known as Miao people who live in the Southwestern part of China. In this region of China there are many high mountains and historically it has been isolated, hence the Miao people have developed their own unique art and culture separate from the Chinese majority known as Han. Wax-dyed tapestry is one of the well known crafts to come from this. The patterns and methodology used in creating these tapestries has been passed down from generation to generation. Each artist adds their own unique touch to these patterns, making every tapestry different. Selling through WorldStock allows the Miao people to keep this ancient art form alive.

The handcrafted nature of this batik wall tapestry will produce minor differences in color and sizing. Measurements are approximate.

Was not what I quite expected.

lovelymo from Brooklyn, NY, May 6, 2009

I returned the item even though the colors were radiant and beautiful. It looked a bit cheesy to me. Some people would like it , I didn't.

Mediocre Piece

marycw from Carson City NV, Nov 5, 2008

There are a few minor blemishes and splotches of paint on the hanging I received. My biggest disappointment with this is that the tassles and the hanging loop acorss the top of the piece are odd colors that do not blend at all with the colors used in the painting itself. There is a lot of magenta, bright red, and bright green which actually clash with the tones in the painting. The image online does not portray these colors as they actually are. I'm disappointed with this.

Flights of fancy

femwolf100 from Durham, NC, Aug 13, 2008

A flock of stylized birds surround a gracefully bent figure. It's Asian, but not the typical Chinese art you often see. That's because this is done by a Chinese minority, the Miao, as opposed to the Han majority. They are famed for a special wax-dye batik used to make these tapestries. This particular wall hanging has a sewn loop at the top, making it easy to slide a rod curtain mount through it. The tassels add a special touch. I would highly recommend it.

Didn't know what I was going to do with this.Really does'nt go in my house. But I love this tapestry. The colors are true to the picture on the sight. Workmanship is very good.Did have to buy a cafe rod for it.But that was fine. For the price you can't beat it.
