India's wood production has been an important part of Indian life for hundreds of years. India has wood with wondrous natural beauty and artisans that produce beautiful wood creations of all kinds that reflect Indian culture and thought. India has many trees for the artisan's craft, including Mango Wood. Mango wood is one of the most environmentally-friendly woods. Ubiquitous throughout Gujarat, which is an area where excessive wood- work has been used for crafts. Mango trees eventually stop producing fruit and need to be harvested and replanted to maintain the orchards. Using the harvested mango wood prevents natural forests from being cut. After the mango trees are replanted, they absorb carbon from the atmosphere and soil as they re-grow. Mango is also dense and hard wood, excellent for making furniture and other sturdy items. Wood is kiln-dried to prevent cracking and enhance stability and durability.

I used 3 of these handcrafted wooden wall hangings to cover holes punched in hollow core doors. They were absolutely perfect for this. My doors are a darker wood and these plaques are very dark so they were offset enough to show up well and add to the decor of the rooms the doors entered into. Excellent solution, plus they truly are pieces of art. I caution to handle them carefully as some of the enamel paint does chip off easily and they are not exactly square...but we are buying hand crafts afterall. Yellows and Reds show up better than some of the other colors. The poppy one is really beautiful. Overall, I like them - just don't love them.
I bought this for a friend in South Africa and it cost me the price of the item to mail it there! The piece is really beautful though and very well made. It's not a cloth hanging however but is a solid wood carving. It was also a little smaller than I thought it would be. Good value for money. If you have a big wall, you'll have to buy at least three!
