• Shona sculptors quarry and select their own stone often preferring serpentine because of its incredible hardness and elegant multi-color finish
• They rarely sketch a work in preparation, preferring to work directly on the stone, and often work more than one piece at a time
• Each piece is individually hand carved and varies slightly in coloring and size
• Among the most appealing of these works of art are the Ukama (loving families) sculptures, which depict mothers and their children, whole families, and couples embraced in love and dancing with joy
• This ukama sculpture is made from rapoka stone
• Designed by Panganai Kwinjo who carves and polishes his sculptures by hand to produce family groups of unusual beauty
• Born into a family of three boys and two girls, Panganai has been carving sculptures in stone for over 10 years
• He credits the joys of growing up in his own family for his inspiration
