    Hand-carved Ashanti Stool (Ghana)

A symbol of unity in the ancient Ashanti empire, the original Ashanti stool was made from gold.

Our distinctive Ashanti stool is available in five authentic African symbols:
Sankofa: Adinkra symbols meaning,'Never forget where you come from regardless of your success.'

Gye Nyame: Adinkra symbol meaning,'God the Omnipotent.'

Crocodile: Depicts crossed crocodiles that symbolize the Ashanti proverb,'We share one stomach, yet we fight over food.'
The stool's design reflects modern style and ancient traditions, incorporating indigenous resources, creating opportunity for local artists, and supporting the development of their economy.

    The Story Behind the Product

Akwasi Agyeman was born into a family of 12 children in the small tribal village of Foase in Ghana, West Africa. The family was so poor that Akwasi was limited to only a 7th grade education in order to help his father farm to feed the family. In 7th grade his teacher asked each of them to make something for art class. Akwasi produced a Fertility Doll as his project and amazed the teacher. Akwasi knew then he had a natural talent for carving. After ten years and with the help of Fair trade Akwasi is now married with two handsome boys. He employs 15 people and has built a small three bedroom house for his family. Akwasi and his fellow artisans hope you enjoy their work.

This stool was just what I was looking for. I wasn't looking for a functional piece for seating, though I am sure guests could sit on it. I chose the Sankofa stool, and like others, I love the fact that it looks darker and more "weathered" than it does in the picture. The color and look is perfect among the green of my plants.

This was a present for my wife, this is the real thing. If someone said the stool is small, thats the whole point. People in Ghana use this stool to smash seeds and they sit in a confortable way so they don't heart their back. My wife is very happy with the stool. The reason is, because she use to live in Africa and she mean to buy one. The quality of this product is great.

The stool is cock-eyed. The base is not symetrical with the stool portion. Just looks odd. I was disappointed with the stool and would not encourage anyone to purchase it.
