Celebrate your love of literature while displaying your eclectic design taste with the Gye Nyame book ends from Ghana.

Gye Nyame is one of the most revered symbols of the Ashanti Tribe of Ghana. It translates roughly into English as'the omnipotence of God--the only thing to fear is God.' These unique pieces have been carved out of native Ghanaian sesse wood using age-old techniques and traditional tools.

    The Story Behind the Product

Akwasi Agyeman was born into a family of 12 children in the small tribal village of Foase in Ghana, West Africa. The family was so poor that Akwasi was limited to only a 7th grade education in order to help his father farm to feed the family. In 7th grade his teacher asked each of them to make something for art class. Akwasi produced a Fertility Doll as his project and amazed the teacher. Akwasi knew then he had a natural talent for carving. After ten years and with the help of Fair trade Akwasi is now married with two handsome boys. He employs 15 people and has built a small three bedroom house for his family. Akwasi and his fellow artisans hope you enjoy their work.

Gye Nyame Bookends (Ghana)

dbtuc from Largo, MD, May 21, 2009

I'm very pleased. They are beautiful, full of African culture, reasonably priced, and fully functional. They give my home a royal touch and I've already shared them and Overstock.com with others.

High Quality Bookends

poeticali from Los Angeles, CA, Jan 25, 2008

I gave these to my brother for part of his Christmas gift. He likes eclectic things and he really loved these. They were high quality and smelled like wood.

I think they are great!

chickie2054 from Troy, MI, Jan 14, 2008

I really love them. They look just as good in person as they do online. The workmanship is great, however, they are not absolutely identical. Typically I'm fairly peticular about such things, but in this instance I think it adds character and only emphasizes the fact that it is hand made.

Trusting in God, as directed

beachgirl69 from New York, Jan 9, 2008

I purchased this item as a Holiday gift for a close friend from Ghana and I must admit I was a little disappointed when I received them. They are obviously handmade, and relatively well crafted however, there was absolutely no symmetry between the two pieces. They were two completely different sized articles in every way...the base, the carved word and the carved book that stands behind the word. Other than the color and general look there was no way to tell they were a pair. The wood was authentic, and again, the quality quite on par but I almost felt uncomfortable presenting them as a gift because of the flaws. In addition, I must note that they would probably be more useful as decorative pieces than bookends considering they were very light and probably would not be able to hold large books in place.
