    Story Behind the Art:

The Aubusson rug takes its name from the French town of Aubusson, a small, picturesque town situated close to the mountains of the Massif Central and lying on the banks of the River Creuse. Although this medieval town ceased to produce rugs over 130 years ago, it continues to host a number of tapestry and rug exhibitions each summer. In the 13th century, French knights, returning from the crusades, brought with them oriental rugs that they called Tapis arrasinois after their Saracen foe. In 1608, Henry IV formally commissioned a weaver named Pierre Dupont, who claimed to have discovered how to make rugs a la facon de perse et du levant, to set up shop in the louvre. So satisfied was Henry with Dupont's rugs, he decreed that the output of the louvre atelier was to be reserved exclusively for the royal family. In 1627, his son, Louis XIII, instructed Dupont to open up a new shop at the Savonnerie, a former soapworks.
