The Story Behind the Art

Pottery of this type is made in Safi, a fishing town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Safi is known as one of the centers for pottery art and utilizes red clay to create ceramic pottery. Clay is first softened by hand, then formed using a potter's foot-powered wheel and guided by age-old techniques. Pieces are dried in the sun before they are baked in kilns over 200 years old. This special harfa, or artisan's craft, is passed on from father to son over generations.
