Add some colorful world flavor to your decor with this Guatemalan embroidered tapestry.
Created by Mayan cooperatives in the western highlands of Guatemala, this handcrafted embroidered tapestry weaves vivid rust red-colored 100-percent cotton into a variety of indigenous designs and patterns.
We strongly recommend that you hand wash your tapestry in cold water and hang it to dry, or have it professionally dry cleaned.
The Story Behind The Product
Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (County) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the village¿s children are able to stay in school.

Customer Reviews
I think the colors and workmanship are excellent. I was hoping for the rose pattern shown on the sample, but the one I received is O.K. The only thing I really didn't like is the lace that was added - it's machine made and polyester and isn't something I would have accepted as handcrafted. It takes away from the rustic, old-world look which is why I wouldn't recommend it to others.
I really could not be happier with this wall hanging. Mine is just a slightly different design than what is pictured (the floral embroidery is done in a circle in the center of the hanging rather than the square design pictured), but certainly close. I really was surprised at how much better the piece looks in person than in the photo! The colors and textures are more vibrant and variable. It is certainly a 'handicraft' work and as such, it is not perfect....I find this to be desireable. I've had it hanging in my office for not quite a full day and have already received numerous compliments on it. I appreciate the value. I was looking for a way to decorate the bare walls of my new office space without spending a fortune and this was a VERY inexpensive fix that adds a ton of interest and looks great!
I just received the Rust red embroidered wall hanging from Guatamala. Although it is beautiful, i am thoroughly disapointed in that it reeks of tobacco smoke! YUK
This tapestry is way better than I expected. The colors are stunning. Workmanship - wow. Looks very expensive. Love it.
Looks much more expensive and attracts the attention of all who view it. I have 2 now which are similar but no 2 are exactly alike. Very classy!!
