Compact Calligraphy Set (China)

In the Far East, writing is an art to be perfected over a lifetime.

This set includes the tools necessary to begin learning the art of calligraphy, including: a set of 5 bamboo and horsehair brushes, black ink stick, red ink paste in porcelain jar, carved mixing stone, porcelain mixing bowl and ladle, porcelain brush stand and soapstone dragon chop (stamp).

The Story Behind the Product

This factory is located in the Guangdong region of mainland China and run by a wonderful family that we here at Overstock.com have befriended over the course of several years. The father is the main person in charge and employs many family members. Day to day operations are run by an aunt while the son is being groomed to take over once his father retires - all of this family greatly adds to the quality and productivity of this factory. Over 300 skilled and non-skilled craftsman work together, passing knowledge and craftsmanship from generation to generation. The working conditions of this group are excellent. The workers always seem to be smiling and are often excited to have new visitors. The factory provides an excellent lunch each day for the staff (my stomach can attest to this), the workers' clothes are clean and the environment seems organized and well run. Attending strictly to the local and international anti-dumping and fair trade practice laws, Oriental Homes is proud to bring a piece of their culture into your home.

This calligraphy set is pretty and nice to look at. I just wish that it came with some sort of instructions.

The only reason that I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is because it is much smaller that I thought it would be. The Set, though, is really beautiful! It's a beautiful gift for someone, with an attractive case, really nice brushes, and charming pottery pieces.

This is a pretty nice little set. It was wrapped up in 3 boxes with fragile all over it, but it still came with a broekn piece.

This set is not intended as a course in Chinese calligraphy, but includes only the tools and materials necessary - with the exception of paper, which is not included. Paper used for Chinese and Japanese calligraphy may be purchased from most art supply stores. The list of items included in this set is very specific and does not include an instruction manual. If you're unfamiliar with Chinese (or Japanese) calligraphy, it would be necessary to purchase an instruction book. Many are available at various price points and may be purchased from any large bookseller. This is a nice, reasonably priced set that would make an excellent gift with the inclusion of an instruction book and paper.
