Story Behind the Art:

The Aubusson rug takes its name from the French town of Aubusson, a small, picturesque town situated close to the mountains of the Massif Central and lying on the banks of the River Creuse. Although this medieval town ceased to produce rugs over 130 years ago, it continues to host a number of tapestry and rug exhibitions each summer. Design came originally from the 13th century, when French knights returning from the crusades brought these oriental rugs home. In 1608 Henry IV commissioned a weaver to set up shop in the Louvre. So satisfied was Henry with these rugs, he decreed that these rugs were to be reserved exclusively for the royal family.
