The Story Behind the Product

Mango wood is indigenous to Northern Thailand. It is here, in the Golden Triangle, where Mr. Suwichack Ampanan and a small group of fellow artisans have been perfecting the craft of working with mango wood. Mr. Ampanan first learned the trade of woodworking about 15 years ago from his father. He now oversees a group of five artisans, but is actively involved in most every piece that leaves the workshop. By employing other local artisans, Mr. Ampanan has allowed them to enjoy a better standard of living than is offered by farming. All mango wood products from Mr. Ampanan's workshop are environmentally responsible. They only use mango trees that can no longer bear fruit. He and his staff hope you enjoy their products as much as they enjoy creating them.

The bowl arrived in a timely manner. The smell of the bowl was objectionable and it was necessary to rub it down well with a lemon-scented oil to get rid of the strange smell. There was a small ding/nick on the top edge of the bowl that was immediately noticeable. I used dark brown shoe polish (Kiwi brand) to bring the dented ding/nick back to the same color as the bowl. This bowl was chosen for a gift, so I did not have time to send it back for another one.

This is a wonderful bowl that I find useful for a multitude of things. It is substantial, well made and the wood is beautiful with just enough carving around the rim to add real interest. It is particularly easy to care for.
