Story Behind the Art

'Himbunkar' was established in 1984 as an initiative of the Himachal Pradesh government. Their main goal is to preserve the regions' rich weaving heritage and to support the livelihood of artisans across the state. They specialize in hand-loomed items, and the exquisite, ancient weaving technique of the Himalayas is still practiced and can be seen in their products.

To further assist the artisans and societies, training programs are offered for improving their skills and introducing new techniques, as well as self-help groups. They provide raw material on a wages-per-unit basis, and expose artisans to new markets. They also receive grants from the government of India.
