Story Behind the Art

As is often the case at Estate auctions, bidding on the mystery box is carried to great heights through passion of the moment rather than passion for the contents. In the case of this overpriced box of fabrics there was a surprise. Salvaged from their existence as luxury bedding for some New England mouse family were two Kashmir wool shawls, tattered and fallen from grace yet beautiful in design and construction. We have for many years been working with a particular weaver of woolen shawls whose family has been performing the craft generations in the Himalayan Foothills of India. Being somewhat of an expert in the filed, our friend felt the complexity of the weave and the design indicated that these shawls dated from late 1800?s and were quite valuable even in their spoiled condition. Our original thought was to use some of the motifs found in the shawl design to develop something new. We left the shawls with him. Months later we received word that he had indeed reproduced each of them in their entirety, though he could not duplicate them exactly.
