Story Behind the Art: Jorge Priori

Born in Lima, Peru, Jorge Priori began to work in textiles in the early 1990s, prompted by his uncle. He foresaw Priori's interest in textiles and his innovative flair. Priori began to work with his father in a thread factory. By 2001, they were creating alpaca wool garments, accessories and blankets. Priori seeks to preserve a tradition that began centuries ago, during the Inca Empire. Alpaca fiber was so highly treasured it was reserved for Inca royalty. 'I use the combed technique, which uses threads of different length and width, to recreate the weave the Incas favored,' explains Priori. Priori's alpaca wool products showcase the material's unique attributes. Alpaca wool is a luxury fiber. It is as soft as cashmere, has the luster of silk, is as durable as wool, and has extraordinarily light fleece that is up to five times warmer than sheep's wool.
