Afghani Turkoman Hand-knotted Rug (2'6 x 4')

Weaving is considered a work of art in the central Asian regions. This Turkoman Bokhara design handmade in Northern Afghanistan, in the cities of Mazar-e Sharif and Andkhoy, has been popular for centuries. Made with 100-percent wool known as'qaraqol', this magnificent piece includes 268 knots per square inch. These rugs have a traditional red background with green, black, navy blue, and white in original Bokhara design.

Rug weaving is one of the biggest industries in Afghanistan, employing thousands. Weaving one rug may take years and involve an entire family. Children often watch the sheep that are raised on the family farms until they are ready to be sheared. Men then shear these sheep and the wool is handspun mostly by older women. Then the master designers and weavers, usually the young women in the family, step in and create these global beauties. To make their jobs more fun, the weavers often change the designs of the rugs.'It is like painting', says Fatima, a 17-year old who goes to school in the mornings and helps her mom in the afternoons.'I like to use my favorite colors on the rugs, because I want to like them when they are finished'.

Gorgeous colors! I'm hanging it on a wall. It's off a little from being a rectangle, so that's my only problem with it. Wouldn't be noticeable on the floor.

I expected the red in this rug to be the same as a similar Afghan rug I own. The whole rug is very, very dark, and not what I imagined from the illustration. Otherwise, it's OK, but can't use it for where it was intended.

I love the pattern on this rug. It's a little on the thin side (compared to the machine-made rug near it), so I may put some extra padding under it.

This Afghani Rug is the perfect size for my front door entry way. Color is rich and the rug itself seems very durable. I would buy this again.
