    Story Behind the Art:

Salihu Ibrahim was born in the eastern region of Ghana in 1964: 'With the death of my father, I was sent to live with one of my father's closest friends, Opanin Osei, a renowned traditional carver to the Akwamu chief and his people. He would usually carve the items and then pass them on to me for the final polishing and beautification. I worked with him for about 15 years, during which time, I learned the various styles and techniques of the Ashanti and Akwamu tribes. Before my decision to come to the city, I had carved about 50 pieces made to help me raise capital to open a workshop. With the help of Osei, these products sold in no time. I never realized how valuable his help was until I decided to get out on my own to sell my products. Being a newcomer in the business, I made mistakes, but my business now flourishes and I am achieving wider recognition.'

  • I Expected More

First of all, be prepared for a long wait to receive this product. Once received, I was disappointed with the tassles which I had to trim to make them more uniform. I Also had to do quite a bit of hand polishing to get the mask to show its true character and color contrast. The darker areas seems to be covered with some sort of white waxing coating that made the mask look dirty. The detail, however, is awesome. Once it was "fined tuned", it displayed nicely. The price was certainly not jusitfied. I have bought a lot nicer mask for less money.

    • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Needed some fine tunig before displaying
  • WOW!

If you are interested in African or related artifacts...and cannot afford the 'real' thing this is as close as you can get. This is a replica but extremely authentic and beautiful. I call this mask 'she'...and she is hanging in a significant spot where her delicate features can be seen and appreciated. Well worth the money. I cherish this piece!

    • Did the color match the color displayed onsite? yes
    • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Excellent
    • How accurate was the sizing? Accurate

  • long wait

While I love to collect tribal art, the wait was WAY too long. About a month to arrive and had a cloudy film on the mask and after wiping off with a damp rag was absolutely beautiful. I would not select again unless they were upfront about the extended time it took to arrive to my home.

    • Did the color match the color displayed onsite? yes, but it would seem the colors were enhanced in the photo and when received there was a "film" on the mask itself
    • Please tell us about the quality of the product. excellent, but too long of a wait to arrive
    • How accurate was the sizing? dead on
