    Story Behind the Art:

Juliana Akandas is happily married with three children. 'I became interested in Ghanaian carvings while working as a secretary. My job took me to their workshops and I got to know almost every carver in the country. I had the opportunity to study various pieces, methods and finishes, as well as their meanings. My favorite piece is the Akuabaa doll. In Ghana's Akan tribe, the doll represents fertility. It is believed that, when given this doll, a barren woman is likely to get pregnant. The doll is also a symbol of twins, and each one receives an Akuabaa so, if one dies, the doll is brought out during the twin festival in remembrance of the dead twin. I was so fascinated with all this, I decided to learn the trade, and did so through a carver in Aburi. Today, almost all my masks are created with a meaning and a history behind them.'
