The stools are accent pieces with an earthy, funky flair. They work great as small side tables next to a chair. I ordered 2 tables. My 3-star rating is because one of the tables was not as finely carved as the other. While handmade objects should not be expected to be "perfect", one table had some obvious slips of the carving tool and should not have been sold as a first-quality object.

Awesome piece for the price!
from Boise, Idaho,  Jul 2, 2007

This bench is low enough to use as an foot stool for the couch and high enough to use as a (portable) end table as well. It is sturdy, beautiful (even if rustic), and well worth the trade! Didn't seem right until I turned the stool/table so I am looking at the swirl clockwise and then, from a feng shui perspective, it felt perfect! If you use it to set drinks on though, you will want to use coasters or shellack the top to seal. This piece of furniture makes me happy to look at!

This ethnic piece serves as a side table to my favorite chair in my study. Although, its construction looks primitive it has borne a lot of weight without coming apart. I LOVE THIS BENCH!!!!!

BEWARE
from North Carolina,  Jun 21, 2011

These are SUPER small and the colors are not NEAR as vibrant as the picture. I would not buy these again....I will keep them but, that's about all I can say. They look like one hard push and they would fall on the floor

  • Did the color match the color displayed onsite? NOT
  • How is the quality of the product? Pretty shotty

Never Again
from New York, NY,  Jun 14, 2011

It came broken so I could not sit or rest anything on it. The color was dull and it looked like a kid put it together in wood shop 101 with clue and colored with crayons. It smells weird and looks very makeshift. Not worth the price. I would not take it if it were free.

  • Did the color match the color displayed onsite? No.
  • How is the quality of the product? Poor
  • Did the product fit true to size? Yes.

Tribal Bench
 from Annitia<><Phila. PA.,  Dec 28, 2010

I was very impressed that it came quickly and was securely wrapped. Although the finish was a bit raw and the bench is smaller than expected, I still love it! It definiely makes a great accent piece all by its self.

Very Disappointed
 Dec 16, 2010

I was very disappointed when I opened the box. The bench is super tiny, poor quality and unattractive. It actually looks like something I could have built when I was in my middle school shop class. Seriously, it's that bad. I can't see how it ended up with a four star rating. Maybe my expectations were higher than most. I've been a happy customer with the majority of my overstock purchases. This one is on the returned items list.

Good Buy
 from Bronx,  Jul 13, 2010

This is an attractive table/foot stool that fits well into my african-related office decor and guest bedroom. There were a few noticible imperfections at the base of the 2 tables I purchased. I covered them with black shoe polish. I may have to eventually use a furniture stain. Consequentially, I would recommend this product with a caveat. The tables arrived more quickly than other products I have purchased from Overstock.

Small but nice
 May 22, 2010

I bought this item based on other reviews saying that they use it for an end table. For my purposes, this is way too small for a table. It's too short and the dimensions are not that wide to really put much on it. It's really just a decorative bench, but a beautiful one nonetheless. Just take the time to break out the tape measure and note the dimensions and the space you are putting it in to make sure that it is big enough if you plan to use this for anything other than a bench.

Discovering Africa
from New York,  May 19, 2010

This bench is from Ghana by artisans and it is individually made. It is small and sturdy and typical of the work they do; it makes for a unique piece of orange and wood. I use it as a display bench in the family room and it hold a statue from Peru called friendship also bought here. The bench Is is striking ,different, and it will give you home an international flavor. So buy it with confidence it is a well made lovely bench. I am so thrilled that I am ordering a second one right now as a match which will hold also something special.

Unique African Bench
 from NYC,  Jul 26, 2009

I've bought two of these--it's a beautiful, hand-painted piece that easily fits into small spaces as a small table/bench--very versatile, unique-looking, full of character.

good for tight spaces
 from bloomington,in,  Jan 24, 2009

i have very little space in my apartment and it fits perfectly by my chair as an end table for my tv remotes and cup of coffee.i don't dare sit on it because i'm too heavy.it is designed for a small person.my mom thought it looked very cute.it does sit lower than the chair arm ,so my dog is not tempted to jump on it yet since i got it.it is very small for a bench.it does go with any world travel look.

A Beautiful Item!!
from West Reading, PA,  Jul 30, 2008

This piece is a nicely crafted and handpainted. I have received several comments from people about the uniqueness of the piece. It is an accent table that I will be displaying in my living room. I would recommend this table if you are interested in African artifacts. Thank you for a beautiful product!!

Traditional African Tribal Bench (Ghana)
from Renton, WA,  May 30, 2008

I received the bench and it was well packed and completely assembled. It was much smaller than I expected it to be, but it is cute and still fits my decor scheme.

Charrming bench
from Albuquerque, NM,  Apr 30, 2008

The bench is attractive and sturdy. My only disappointment was that it was smaller than I had imagined. It is really more a decorative item than a practical piece of furniture, although a child could certainly sit on it comfortably.

Beautiful, earthy, ACCENT bench
from Rockville, MD,  Apr 21, 2008

I capitalized ACCENT in my review title, because this is what I feel the bench is - a beautiful, earthy, accent bench. And... I love it. If you're looking a bench sturdy & secure enough for people to sit on? I'm not sure this is for you. I didn't get the bench for that purpose. I needed something to put in an area of a room that needed "something" - and this is perfect for that use. Yes - it's secure enough to put plants on (but why cover the artwork on the seat?), and may even be sturdy enough to sit down on (I've not even sat on the bench - it's a little low for me, anyway). And, I'm not saying the bench is wobbly - I don't feel it is. But, there are benches clearly made to be sat on, and there are benches clearly made to be looked at - and this falls into the latter. The colors of the bench are wonderful - warm. The look of the bench is terrific. It really dressed up an area (funny... "primitive" dresses up an area" - but it's true) - the room suddenly "made sense" when I placed this bench under a window. Would I get this again? In a heartbeat. I love it.

Colorful
 from Iowa,  Mar 31, 2008

This is a nice bench, quite solid. It is too small for a good end table, but works well on our screen porch - a place to set a book or a drink. It is distinctive, colorful, and a nice conversation piece.
