Story Behind the Art:

From the time she was a small child, Nyoman Sukartini was taught by her mother to be a Balinese woman. 'In mother's mind, a Balinese woman must devote her life to God, her husband and also to society. She taught me how to cook and do housework and how to make offerings. At 16, I began studying batik, ceramics and other home industries in Gianyar. Back from school at 19, I took an apprenticeship with a silversmith in a village where they specialized in jewelry. I asked Nyoman Suarjana, a very good friend, to learn silverwork with me so we could work together in the future. In 1989, we were married and, with a loan of less than $50 dollars from my mother-in-law, we started to make our own silver. After facing difficult times, I now live happily with my family and our business provides enough to educate our three sons.'
