Story Behind the Art
SMOLArt is a group of artists who live in the rural village of Tabaka, Kenya. Soapstone is mined from great pits in the area surrounding Kiisi, Kenya. The mined stone is then delivered to carvers who carve sculptures from the natural stone the color of which ranges from cream to pink to brown to yellow to black with a marbling in each of them. Once carved, the craftspeople smooth rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water and polish the piece to a high gloss or paint African motifs in brilliant colors with etched accents. All of the products are completely handmade. The tools consist of household items, such as screwdrivers, hand drills and switchblades.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.

Love my coasters!! I was hesitant to purchase because I have young children at home and was afraid they would break them. These coasters are durable. I love the color and unique pictures on each coaster. The color is exactly the same as online. The size is for average cup or mug. I very satisfied with my coasters and proud to help worldstock artisans.Read More
I already dropped one on the wooden floor twice and they are still intact. I like how this product has characters and also very sturdy!Read More
These coasters are beyond beautiful. Not only are the animals hand painted onto them, they are also etched in. I would highly recommend these coasters to anyone. Please note the smaller size, they are only about 3" in diameter, but perfect for my use. The coasters are extremely well made and will last me forever. I just love them, and am so happy with my purchase.Read More
I love the coasters. They are a little small but everything I've read about soapstone, it will last forever. Plus the artwork is good.Read More
These are such pretty little coasters, and they add a nice touch to our African themed room. The deep red is really nice, and I like the artwork. They are quite small, however, so note the diameter. Also, being handmade, they are not exactly uniform in size, which kind of dictates the order that they will stack in the holder. In my set, the only one that will fit on top is of a kangaroo. Not sure why a kangaroo is thrown in there since I thought they were only in Australia! Maybe I am wrong. But I would much rather display the giraffe!Read More
So. I'm hesitant to criticize these coasters, because they are definitely handmade and far better than any soapstone carving/drawing I could ever hope to do. The drawings of the animals are beautiful. The color is beautiful, and they're definitely a unique touch in our living room. Even the stand has little intricate trees drawn on the side. That being said, you have to put the coasters in a certain order in their holder (at least with our set). If the antelope and zebra coasters are not on top of the stack, they will become stuck in the holder and you cannot use them. Our poor zebra coaster has a scratch on the side because we had to use a knife (literally) to free it. Additionally, the coasters are a tad too small for my large coffee cup, but they work wonderfully for all our our cups and glasses. Would I buy them again? Yes. They're for a good cause and are truly one of a kind. I just wish they all fit perfectly into the stand!Read More
A little pricy but unique and very pretty. Color was very vibrant and a one of a kind feeling regarding the designs.Read More
